AVAS rules: low-speed alerts up to 20 km/h for EVs, mandatory from Nov 1, 2026
The system is designed to automatically emit an audible signal when a vehicle is moving at speeds of up to 20 kilometers per hour, inclusive. The requirement to equip vehicles with AVAS applies exclusively to cars that are capable of moving without starting an internal combustion engine.
The core purpose of this measure is to improve road safety, especially for vulnerable road users, including pedestrians with impaired vision. Quiet movement without the usual engine noise can make such cars harder to notice by ear, which in turn increases the risk of traffic collisions. Against that backdrop, adding a clear low-speed sound cue seems a logical step.
Vehicles already in operation and registered before the new rule takes effect are exempt from installing AVAS. Starting November 1, 2026, all new vehicle models brought to market will be required to meet this standard. It’s a pragmatic balance: no retrofits for existing fleets, and a clear deadline for future models.
