Ram 1500 EcoDiesel settlement for fire hazards: what owners need to know
The American Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is once again at the center of a legal settlement, this time over potential fire risks. Owners of 2014-2019 model year pickups may be eligible for compensation if a faulty EGR cooler led to coolant leaks and fire hazards. This case has dragged on for years, but now it's moving into the practical phase—payments and reimbursements.
The Core Issue
The claims centered on the design of the exhaust gas recirculation cooler. Over time, this component could crack, allowing coolant to enter the intake system. On a hot diesel engine, this mixture could potentially ignite inside the motor.
The manufacturer hasn't formally admitted fault but agreed to settle the dispute to resolve the wave of owner lawsuits. The EcoDiesel was always marketed as a fuel-efficient alternative to V8 engines, but real-world reliability fell short of expectations.
Who Qualifies for Compensation
The settlement covers Ram 1500 EcoDiesel models from 2014 through 2019, built between June 2013 and October 2019. Owners whose vehicles suffered fire damage can claim up to three thousand dollars with proper documentation.
Partial reimbursement is also available for those who paid for EGR cooler repairs during the recall period. Additional compensation covers rental car expenses and coolant costs.
What Owners Should Do
The deadline to file claims is May 16, 2026. Those who disagree with the settlement can opt out or object, but they face strict early-year deadlines. For most owners, filing for compensation is the more practical route.
Meanwhile, Ram continues to expand its lineup. The market still awaits a new range of pickups, with demand shifting back toward traditional V8s while interest in electric versions has temporarily cooled.
