Toyota recalls GR Supra for starter defect that may cause fire

Toyota has issued a recall for the 2021-2023 GR Supra sports car due to a starter issue that, in rare cases, could increase the risk of overheating or fire. BMW attributes the defect to unexpected wear on an internal starter component, which may cause it to fail.

This recall affects approximately 800 vehicles. While the announcement doesn't specify which engine versions are involved, the problem could potentially impact both the 2.0-liter B48 turbocharged inline-four and the 3.0-liter B58 turbocharged inline-six. Both engines are supplied by BMW, which explains the technical similarities between the GR Supra and the BMW Z4.

Owners are advised to check their vehicle identification number (VIN) on Toyota's website or through the NHTSA recall search service. However, it's important to note that this is a voluntary recall, so information may not immediately appear in the federal agency's database.

As a remedy, Toyota dealers will replace the starter with an improved version at no cost. The company plans to begin sending notifications to owners in late March 2026. Until repairs are completed, Toyota recommends not leaving the vehicle running unattended due to the potential fire risk.
