2027 GMC Sierra could bring back a physical key

The 2027 GMC Sierra is expected to bring significant changes, from its design and interior to updated powertrains. However, the latest observation from a prototype has surprised even experts: the pickup might reintroduce a physical ignition key.

A spy photo of a test vehicle shows a cardboard tag with an instruction that reads, "To turn off — press the key and turn." While the ignition lock and key aren't visible in the photo, the label itself, duplicated in French, raises questions. It's unclear whether this is a prototype-specific detail or a planned return to a traditional engine-start system.

A shift to a keyless "Brake to Start" system is also possible. This technology, already used in GM's electric vehicles, automatically starts the car when the brake pedal is pressed, provided a key fob is present. However, this approach hasn't been used yet for internal combustion engine models like the Sierra 1500.

In 2019, GMC phased out keys in most trims, and with the 2022.5 refresh, a push-button start became standard across all versions. A return to a physical key would be unexpected, especially in an era of widespread digitalization.

If GMC does bring back the physical key, it would be an unconventional move. This could be aimed at professional users who prioritize simplicity and reliability. Alternatively, it might just be a temporary measure during testing. Either way, this development is worth watching.
