Hyundai Palisade recall for side airbag defect

Hyundai has announced a large-scale service campaign, recalling 568,000 Palisade SUVs due to a risk of incorrect deployment of side airbags. The issue was identified by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The Defect Details

According to NHTSA, the side airbags intended for third-row passengers may deploy improperly in a collision. This involves faulty activation logic, which could potentially reduce protection in side impacts. Hyundai is currently working with engineers to develop a technical fix and preparing an update package for service centers.

Supplier of the Defective Parts

As clarified by SPEEDME, the passive safety system components were produced by Autoliv, the world's largest supplier of airbags and seatbelts. Most global automakers use its products, but the specific batch installed on the Palisade has a diagnosed deviation from the norm.

Impact on Owners

Hyundai plans to notify owners officially and offer free repairs at dealerships. Until the fix is applied, driving the vehicle remains safe, but in an accident, the third-row airbag might not function as intended. The manufacturer promises to provide detailed recommendations once the technical solution is approved.
