Opel sees increased electric vehicle demand after subsidy launch

Opel has reported a surge in demand for electric vehicles following the introduction of a new government subsidy for EV purchases. The company's head, Florian Hüttl, noted that the impact was noticeable within the first few days, with increased online inquiries, higher dealer traffic, and more active customer engagement at promotional events.

To prevent delivery delays, Opel has ramped up production at its plants in Eisenach and Rüsselsheim. The Eisenach facility produces the Grandland Electric, while Rüsselsheim handles the fully electric Astra. According to Hüttl, both sites are equipped to respond flexibly to demand thanks to the Multi-Energy strategy.

In addition, the company is boosting sales through low leasing rates. With the subsidy covering the initial deposit, Opel offers the Astra from €220 per month and the Grandland from €249 per month.

However, the Opel chief believes the program needs refinement. The current scheme only supports new vehicles, which could negatively affect the residual value of used cars. Opel advocates for including slightly used, low-mileage vehicles in the support framework.
