Citroën plans bold redesign for next-generation C4 hatchback

Citroën plans to fundamentally change its approach to the next generation of the C4 model, making it as distinct as possible from competitors and other vehicles in the brand's lineup. According to design director Pierre Leclerc, the new hatchback version should have a completely unique appearance that doesn't replicate either the current C4 or other models from the brand.

The current Citroën C4 has been on the market for six years and is now the oldest model in the range. Its replacement is expected within the next two years. While the current model is built on the CMP platform, management has previously considered moving the future C4 to the simpler and more affordable Smart Car architecture used in the C3 and C3 Aircross to reduce production and retail costs.

Citroën emphasizes that technical unification won't affect the vehicle's appearance. Leclerc stated that the new C4 must look completely different and will maintain the classic hatchback format rather than becoming an enlarged C3 or a shrunken C5. The company views experimentation as a key part of its DNA within the Stellantis group.

CEO Xavier Chardon noted that the brand is willing to take design risks to stand out from mass-market competitors. He explained that future models, including new vehicles scheduled for 2026, should be bold even if such designs don't appeal to everyone.
