Geely takes 26.4% of Renault do Brasil to boost EVs
Chinese automaker Geely is expanding its global footprint by acquiring a 26.4% stake in Renault do Brasil, 32CARS.RU reports, citing its sources. The deal strengthens the companies’ strategic partnership and opens a new chapter for the electric-vehicle segment in Latin America’s largest market.
Geely and Renault had already teamed up on the Horse Powertrain project, focused on hybrid and internal-combustion technologies. In South Korea, their collaboration produced the Renault Grand Koleos crossover, based on the Geely Xingyue L. The alliance is now entering a new phase: the companies are preparing to launch electric vehicles for Brazil.
Geely will gain access to Renault’s plant in São José dos Pinhais, where the Geely EX5 electric crossover is already assembled under the Renault badge. The new agreement will increase the share of local production and start rolling out models on the flexible GEA platform, suitable for both hybrids and battery-electric cars.
This move underscores how China is becoming a strategic partner for global carmakers. The Geely–Renault tie-up could be what finally helps EVs win over South America, combining European design with Chinese technology.
