Germany produced 1.22 million electric cars in 2025, a 15% increase
In 2025, Germany produced approximately 1.22 million fully electric vehicles, marking a 15% increase from the previous year. According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), electric cars accounted for 29% of the country's total automotive production, meaning more than one in four passenger cars made were electric.
Overall passenger car production in Germany reached 4.15 million units. Beyond battery electric vehicles (BEVs), factories also turned out around 450,000 plug-in hybrids. Combined, BEVs and PHEVs totaled 1.67 million cars, or 40% of the total output.
Germany manufactures electric vehicles for a wide range of brands, including Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Porsche, Ford, and Tesla, though companies do not disclose exact production figures by model.
By year-end, Germany became the world's second-largest producer of electric vehicles after China. The VDA highlights that for sustainable growth in electromobility, development of charging infrastructure, modernization of energy grids, and reductions in electricity costs are necessary.
In 2026, production of electrified vehicles is expected to grow by 6%, reaching 1.76 million units. However, some key new models for 2026 will be produced by German conglomerates outside the country.
