2026 Toyota Prado Altitude gets tire pressure monitoring system
The most off-road capable version of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, the Altitude trim, has received a significant update for the 2026 model year. A tire pressure monitoring system, specifically adapted for its 18-inch wheels and Toyo all-terrain tires, has been added to its equipment. This enhancement to off-road capability has been implemented without increasing the cost of this specific trim, although the entire Prado lineup became more expensive by $700 starting January 1st due to an inflationary price adjustment.
What's New for the 2026 Model Year
The key change is the introduction of a TPMS, one specifically tailored for the Altitude's configuration. Previously, this technology was only available on the VX and Kakadu versions, which use 20-inch wheels. Now, for the first time, the Altitude gets full pressure monitoring, matching the functionality of the off-road-focused Lexus GX550 Overtrail.
Following the January price adjustment, the Altitude now costs 93,400 Australian dollars. Importantly, the trim retains its full off-road package, including all-terrain tires, a rear differential lock, a front anti-roll bar disconnect mechanism, black exterior accents, a sunroof, and the two-tone Tanami Taupe and Ningaloo Blue color options. In essence, the Altitude remains the same package focused on genuine off-roading but gains a crucial technological refinement. This makes tire and suspension behavior more predictable on rocky and sandy terrain.
Competition
Against rivals focused on serious off-road tasks, the 2026 Prado Altitude now holds a stronger position in the mid-premium segment. The Lexus GX550 Overtrail still boasts more power and advanced electronics and suspension. However, the updated Altitude now offers a complete set of basic wheel condition monitoring tools for the first time. This is a vital element when working with reduced tire pressure off-road, where all-terrain tires are used to their maximum potential.
The Ford Everest Wildtrak emphasizes modern driver aids and a sophisticated multimedia system. Yet, its off-road architecture lacks a disconnectable front stabilizer bar and does not provide such precise tire pressure control adapted for all-terrain rubber. On challenging ground, the Prado, especially after this update, feels like a more confident tool.
The new-generation Mitsubishi Pajero Sport maintains appeal through price and reliability. However, it falls short in the technological flexibility of its suspension and its capabilities for managing tire pressure. This makes it a more traditional, rather than advanced, off-roader.
The Nissan Patrol Y62 remains one of the most powerful and durable players in the segment. It focuses on raw traction and comfort rather than electronic precision in chassis control. In terms of real off-road functionality, the Altitude now feels more modern and technologically adept.
Overall, the updated Prado Altitude has moved noticeably closer to the premium off-road class. It successfully retains its own unique combination of accessibility, practicality, and readiness for true off-road scenarios.
