Land Rover confirms new electric Range Rover model for 2024
Land Rover has officially confirmed another electric Range Rover model, positioned between the upcoming replacement for the Evoque and the full-size Range Rover Electric. This new EV will debut later this year, marking a key expansion of the brand's electric strategy.
JLR's CFO, Richard Molyneux, announced the news during an earnings conference. He described the model as a unique addition to the Range Rover lineup, though technical details remain under wraps. In terms of timing and positioning, this appears to be the electric successor to the Velar, arriving ahead of the compact electric Evoque slated for 2027 and shortly after the flagship Range Rover Electric launches.
According to Automotive News, the new electric crossover will feature a lower, more elongated body with proportions closer to an estate than a traditional SUV. This design focuses on improving aerodynamics and efficiency, which are particularly critical for electric vehicles. The model will be the first production vehicle built on JLR's new Electric Modular Architecture platform, which will also underpin future compact and mid-size EVs from the group.
Production will take place at the Halewood plant in the UK, already upgraded to manufacture models on the EMA architecture. Power specifications and range have not been disclosed, but the company emphasizes that this newcomer will not be a simplified or budget version of the Range Rover. Instead, it targets buyers who prioritize efficiency, design, and road presence over pure off-road capability.
Launching this model before the electric Evoque signals Land Rover's focus on the premium mid-size segment. This move means Range Rover will soon offer a complete electric lineup spanning compact, mid-size, and full-size classes, with the new Velar EV potentially becoming one of the brand's most conceptually significant vehicles in recent years.
