Next-generation Hyundai Tucson XRT spotted testing in Arctic

Hyundai has begun active road testing of the next-generation Tucson XRT, which will hit the market as a 2027 model year vehicle. The prototype was spotted in the Arctic, indicating the final tuning stage for the fully redesigned compact crossover.

The new Tucson significantly changes its visual identity. Instead of the current model's smooth lines, the prototype features a more angular and upright silhouette with a flat hood, straight roofline, and pronounced wheel arches. The design echoes elements already seen on the new Santa Fe. The front end sports a new lighting signature with vertical LED elements and a hood that wraps over the fenders.

The XRT version is no longer just a cosmetic package. The prototype comes with red tow hooks, Continental all-terrain tires, larger roof rails, and revised bumpers with improved approach and departure angles. This positions the Tucson XRT closer to models like the Subaru Wilderness and Toyota RAV4 Woodland.

On the technical side, Hyundai is betting on electrification. Most of the Tucson lineup is expected to shift to hybrid powertrains, with the XRT potentially using an updated TMED-II architecture for better efficiency and energy recovery. A plug-in hybrid version will remain for the North American market.

Global testing is underway in both the Arctic and California, highlighting the U.S. market's importance for this model. The new Tucson is set to debut in late 2026, with sales starting in 2027.
