Tesla Semi electric truck specs: power, range, and charging details
Tesla has quietly updated the official specifications for its Semi electric truck, confirming an 800 kW power output and two versions: Standard Range and Long Range. The base configuration offers 520 km of range at a gross vehicle weight of 37,200 kg, while the extended version provides 800 km. Both models use three independent motors on the rear axle and consume an average of 1.7 kWh per mile. The Semi also supports megawatt charging, reaching up to 60% capacity in half an hour, with the Long Range capable of accepting up to 1.2 MW.
The estimated curb weight is under 20 tonnes for the base version and around 23 tonnes for the Long Range. This allows for a payload of approximately 20–21 tonnes, making the Semi competitive in regional and long-haul transport. Tesla hasn't disclosed the battery capacity, but industry estimates suggest around 900 kWh for the 800 km version. A key test of the concept was an 800 km run under full load conducted in 2022.
These new specifications apply to the updated Semi version presented at a shareholder meeting, featuring improved aerodynamics, a redesigned frame, and updated front lighting. Serial production has begun at the Nevada factory, with large-scale deliveries expected after ramping up output. Currently, a limited batch is in operation, with PepsiCo being the largest user with 36 vehicles.
The main intrigue lies in the updated price. The historical figures of $150,000–180,000 for different versions are long outdated, and the final cost will be a decisive factor for carriers. Now, Tesla faces a key challenge: ensuring mass production of the Semi and demonstrating a real reduction in cost per mile compared to diesel counterparts.
