Audi RS5 debuts with plug-in hybrid powertrain and advanced features
Audi is putting the finishing touches on the new RS5, set to be the most technologically advanced and powerful vehicle from Audi Sport in recent years. The model will replace the previous RS4 Avant and RS5 Sportback, offering two body styles: a sedan and an estate. The big news is that, for the first time, the RS lineup will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
At its heart is a 2.9-liter bi-turbo V6 paired with electric motors. Total output will exceed 600 horsepower, positioning the RS5 as a direct competitor to the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63 SE Performance. Electric torque will be delivered directly to the wheels, which should sharpen response and enhance the precision of the quattro system. The hybrid module is expected to use a battery with a capacity of around 20.7 kWh, providing up to 100 kilometers of electric-only range, matching the current capabilities of the A5 e-hybrid.
The RS5's exterior has also undergone significant changes, as hinted at in the first teaser video on Instagram: larger air intakes, a bold grille, a redesigned rear diffuser, new taillights, and unique alloy wheels. The estate will get a roof spoiler, while the sedan will feature an integrated rear element. Inside, the focus is on sportiness, with Alcantara materials, red accents, signature RS badging, and a new triple-display architecture with screens up to 14.5 inches in size.
The suspension and brakes have been specifically tuned for sport mode. The torque-vectoring differential works in tandem with the electric motors, and the platform itself has been adapted to handle the high loads of track driving.
Aimed at a fiercely competitive market, Audi is betting on a blend of power, hybrid efficiency, and traditional quattro dynamics—a balance that could re-establish the model as one of the most compelling sports sedans in its class.
