Geely unveils SUV inspired by Galaxy Cruiser concept
Geely has unveiled the first images of its production SUV, which draws inspiration from the Galaxy Cruiser concept. Targeting the Land Rover Defender audience, the model is set to launch in China by the end of 2026, with a European market entry expected to follow.
Prototypes are currently undergoing winter testing in Sweden. The company reports that climate systems, powertrain efficiency, and traction in extreme cold are being evaluated.
Visually, the vehicle retains the angular architecture of the concept, featuring short overhangs, flared wheel arches, a swing-out rear door with a spare tire, and muscular rear haunches.
Preliminary information suggests the SUV is built on the SEA-R platform. It is expected to feature a hybrid powertrain with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine and three electric motors. A battery with a capacity of around 70 kWh may provide up to 354 km of electric range. A version with a 1.5-liter hybrid from the Galaxy M9 is also under consideration.
The vehicle is reported to include an intelligent all-wheel-drive system with AI algorithms. The concept claimed the ability to stay afloat for up to two hours and "swim" at speeds of up to 8.5 km/h, though it remains unclear if this feature will carry over to the production model.
This SUV launch is strategically important for Geely. While Land Rover is losing ground in China and scaling back local production, the Chinese conglomerate is effectively entering the premium off-road segment with its own development.
The SEA-R platform allows for component sharing with Zeekr and Lotus brands, which helps reduce costs. If Geely can offer a Defender-like vehicle at a lower price than European competitors, it could increase pressure on the British brand not only in China but also in Europe, where demand for rugged SUVs continues to grow.
