Mercedes-Benz adds Fraunhofer spatial audio to MBUX for immersive sound
Mercedes-Benz has integrated Fraunhofer IDMT's spatial 3D audio technology into vehicles equipped with the fourth-generation MBUX multimedia system. This new audio technology transforms standard stereo sound into immersive spatial audio.
The system is available in the CLA, GLC, GLB, and S-Class models. Mercedes plans to expand its availability to other models in the future. The feature works in cars fitted with either Burmester premium audio systems or the latest version of MBUX.
The technology converts regular stereo recordings into spatial sound. Users can adjust the immersive audio effect from subtle to maximum intensity, creating a presence effect similar to a live concert.
Development began in 2021 as a collaboration between Fraunhofer IDMT, Mercedes-Benz, and Burmester. The algorithm was adapted for automotive use, considering computational power constraints, installation space, and integration costs. The technology first appeared in the electric CLA in 2025.
Fraunhofer IDMT also announced the rebranding of its SpatialSound Wave technology to Audiofields. This system can handle not only music but also position system sounds and warnings within the cabin space. The technology debuted on February 27, 2026, at an event in Erfurt, Germany. This new system will contribute to the ongoing development of digital capabilities and multimedia technologies in new vehicles.
