Ford's strategy for an affordable electric sedan to compete with Civic and Corolla
Ford is exploring the possibility of launching an affordable electric sedan to compete with popular models like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. CEO Jim Farley made this clear in an interview with Car and Driver.
Farley stated that Ford does not want to cede the midsize market segment to Japanese and Korean competitors. The company believes its most promising avenue for competition lies in the electric vehicle segment. This focus would allow Ford to leverage new technologies and better compete with Chinese manufacturers.
He noted that while Ford has well-developed hybrid technology, the company's current strategy centers on advancing its electric platforms. The roadmap for the Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform includes several new affordable models. This platform could serve as the foundation for a compact electric sedan capable of rivaling gasoline and hybrid versions of the Civic and Corolla.
According to Farley, European buyers are already actively choosing compact cars, while interest in such models is just beginning to grow in the United States. In Europe, Ford is also collaborating with Renault to develop two new subcompact electric vehicles.
