MG unveils compact electric concept car for 2027 launch

MG will unveil a brand-new compact electric concept car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. The production version, likely to be named MG 2, will be a four-meter hatchback positioned below the MG 4 Urban, competing with the Renault 5, BYD Dolphin Surf, and the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Polo.

MG plans to launch the model by the end of 2027. The car is expected to use the front-wheel-drive E3 platform already found in the MG 4 Urban. Battery options may include a standard 42.8 kWh unit and a new semi-solid-state battery, which offers better cold-weather performance and enhanced safety.

The MG 2 project is part of SAIC's broader European expansion, with the brand's lineup potentially growing to 18 models within two years. The new car will feature distinct European styling and is being developed by MG's UK design center.

MG's plans also include starting European production, a crucial move given high tariffs on Chinese EVs. The MG 2 could be one of the first candidates for local assembly.

Meanwhile, MG is strengthening its position in higher segments. A large hybrid crossover, the S9, is expected later this year and has already appeared in Euro NCAP documentation.

Despite rising hybrid sales, MG's share of the UK EV market fell by 23% last year. The company hopes the compact MG 2 and an updated lineup will rekindle buyer interest in affordable electric vehicles.
