BMW iX1 electric crossover: next-gen model with Neue Klasse platform
BMW is preparing a completely new generation of its iX1 electric crossover. A prototype was recently spotted during winter testing in Sweden. Contrary to expectations, the company has decided to skip a typical facelift and move directly to an all-new model.
The next BMW iX1, known internally as NB5, will be built on the new Neue Klasse platform. Series production is scheduled to begin in November 2027 at BMW's Regensburg plant.
A key technical change is the switch to rear-wheel drive. While the current base iX1 is front-wheel drive, the new architecture supports only rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations. The lineup will also include versions with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive.
The crossover will feature sixth-generation electric motors and new cylindrical battery cells with higher energy density. This should lead to significant improvements in range and charging power. For context, the current iX1 supports charging up to 130 kW, whereas the new systems could reach around 400 kW.
The interior will be completely redesigned. Instead of a traditional instrument panel, it will have a Panoramic Vision system that projects information at the base of the windshield. The central part of the dashboard will house a large tablet-style multimedia screen.
This new electric crossover will be part of the next wave of Neue Klasse models from BMW. Its global debut is expected shortly before production begins.
