Rivian R2 electric crossover unveiled with performance and affordability
American company Rivian has unveiled details about its new R2 electric crossover, designed as a more affordable alternative to the existing R1T and R1S models. Targeting the mass-market segment, this newcomer aims to compete with popular electric SUVs like the Tesla Model Y.
The initial version will be the R2 Performance with a Launch Package, starting at $57,990. It features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 656 horsepower. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes about 3.6 seconds, placing this model firmly in the performance electric crossover category.
Range is estimated at roughly 330 miles on the EPA cycle, equivalent to around 530 km. The crossover comes with an NACS port, allowing direct access to Tesla's Supercharger network—a practical advantage for charging convenience.
Despite being more compact than the R1 models, the Rivian R2 retains off-road capabilities. Ground clearance is 244 mm, the approach angle reaches 25 degrees, and towing capacity goes up to 2 tons.
Inside, the vehicle boasts a minimalist cabin with natural materials, including birch wood trim. Standard features include heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and steering wheel, plus a 975-watt Rivian Premium Audio system.
The model also comes with modern electronics and the Autonomy+ driver-assistance system, which supports hands-free driving on over 3.5 million miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada. A subscription for this feature costs $49.99 per month or $2,500 as a one-time purchase.
Looking ahead, the R2 lineup will expand. A Premium version is set to arrive later in 2026, starting at $53,990, while a more affordable Standard model will launch in 2027. Its price could be around $45,000, positioning Rivian to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y. Deliveries of the first R2 Launch Edition vehicles are expected to begin in spring 2026.
