Lotus strategy shift to global sports cars with hybrid models

The British brand Lotus is navigating a challenging phase, with sales remaining low and its future heavily reliant on support from the Chinese conglomerate Geely. Management is attempting to shift strategy, aiming to transform Lotus into a global sports car manufacturer.

Historically, the brand built its reputation through motorsport achievements and the engineering innovations of founder Colin Chapman. Yet, this strong reputation has not translated into significant sales volume. Since Geely's acquisition, the company has embarked on a major transformation effort.

China now plays a pivotal role in Lotus's development. The Wuhan factory produces the Eletre and Emeya models. In the first half of 2025, approximately half of the brand's deliveries were to the Chinese market.

Despite earlier plans to go fully electric, the strategy has been revised. The new Eletre X Hybrid employs a hybrid system that blends elements of an electric vehicle, a range-extender, and a plug-in hybrid. This shift reflects changing market demand.

Lotus is also restructuring its business. The company has announced cuts of up to 550 jobs in the UK and is consolidating operations under Lotus Technology. Management hopes that new 2026 models and hybrid offerings will help strengthen the brand's global position, but the strategy's success will largely hinge on demand in China.
