Aptera begins assembling validation units of its solar EV
California startup Aptera says it has begun assembling validation units of its solar electric vehicle — a tangible first step from prototype to series production. The builds are taking place on a new line in Southern California, using components sourced from suppliers.
The company notes that the new setup is designed to fine-tune precise manufacturing processes and deliver consistent quality for future cars. Aptera is working with a large assembly fixture that streamlines the body-to-chassis join and helps engineers quickly identify and correct defects. It’s a careful, methodical approach that usually separates intent from improvisation.
Production will remain low-volume for now, but the line’s launch nudges the model closer to market. Preliminary figures suggest the Launch Edition, priced at about $40,000, can travel up to 640 km on a single charge and add up to 64 km of daily range from its integrated solar panels.
With urban EV interest on the rise, Aptera looks set to be among the most unusual and forward-thinking newcomers slated for 2026.
