Subaru transforms BRZ into rally car with turbo and all-wheel drive

Subaru is preparing a surprising new vehicle: the BRZ coupe has been transformed into a full-fledged rally car. This model will feature a turbocharged engine, all-wheel drive, and increased ground clearance—a radical departure from the familiar rear-wheel-drive sports car concept. The project is being developed by the new Sports Vehicle Planning Office and is intended for competition in the Japanese rally championship.

Judging by the first images, the car has undergone significant modifications: widened wheel arches, a massive rear wing, a roof air intake, and off-road tires. The key change is the switch to all-wheel drive and the addition of turbocharging. This brings the BRZ closer to Subaru's classic rally cars, even though the model wasn't originally designed for such a drivetrain.

Engineers had to tackle complex challenges in layout and platform adaptation. The car also gained increased clearance and long-travel suspension, enabling effective performance on dirt and challenging surfaces. However, the wheelbase remains unchanged.

It's important to note that this is purely a racing version—a production model isn't currently planned. Still, the idea itself shows Subaru's ambition to merge road and motorsport development.

This project is pure fan service for brand enthusiasts. But if Subaru sees audience interest, such a concept could well inspire future road-going models.
