Mazda explores high-performance electric pickup using Deepal E07 platform
Mazda is exploring the possibility of entering the high-performance electric pickup segment, but it's taking an unconventional approach. Instead of developing a vehicle from scratch, the company may use an existing Chinese platform.
This project is tied to the deepening collaboration between Mazda and Changan, which has already produced several joint models. These include the Mazda 6e sedan and the upcoming CX-6e crossover, both built on Chinese-developed platforms.
Now the focus has shifted to the unusual Deepal E07 pickup. This isn't a traditional truck but a transformer that can function as both an SUV and a pickup thanks to its adaptable body.
The Deepal E07 features an electric powertrain with up to 600 horsepower, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 3.9 seconds. With a range of around 550 km, the model is not only powerful but also practical.
For Mazda, this project would represent a significant departure from its traditional philosophy. The brand is known for efficient and well-balanced vehicles, not extreme pickups.
Interest in such models is growing, particularly in Australia where powerful and versatile vehicles are in demand. The success of similar projects has already been demonstrated by BYD and Ford, which are actively developing the hybrid and electric pickup segment.
For now, the project remains under discussion with no final decision made. However, the fact that Mazda is considering such a move indicates a shift in strategy and a willingness to step beyond its usual boundaries.
