Volkswagen EV recall for battery module problems in ID series
Volkswagen is recalling 74,579 electric vehicles globally based on its MEB platform, along with 19,452 Cupra Born models. The recall stems from potential irregularities in high-voltage battery modules.
Affected models include the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz, and ID.Buzz Cargo, produced between February 2022 and August 2024 at plants in Zwickau and Hanover. According to regulator KBA, faulty modules could reduce driving range and trigger warning signals, with a risk of fire noted. However, no incidents of damage or injuries have been reported.
As part of the service campaign, Volkswagen will update the software and inspect the battery modules. Any modules found to be defective will be replaced. While the battery cells for these models were sourced from external suppliers, the company assembled the modules itself. The exact causes of the discrepancies remain unspecified.
