BMW pilots HVO100 diesel across fleets to cut CO2 by up to 90%

BMW Group unveiled at the Fleet Europe Days event in Luxembourg a new approach to shrinking the carbon footprint of diesel cars. The company has launched a demo fleet running on HVO100—hydrotreated vegetable oil—that, compared with conventional diesel, can cut CO2 emissions by up to 90%. For diesel-dependent fleets, it reads as a practical step that delivers meaningful reductions without touching the hardware.

Starting in January 2025, all diesel BMW models manufactured in Germany are filled with HVO100 before they head to dealers. The project will track fuel use through vehicle data and the payment systems of fleet operators, adding transparency to the shift toward cleaner fuels.

The company notes that using HVO100 does not require engine modifications and can be an effective solution for corporate fleets and owners of 2026 vehicles. BMW is also urging the EU to accelerate the rollout of RED III standards, which call for at least a 30% cut in fuel-related emissions.
