Chinese brands Omoda and Jaecoo localize EV production in Spain

Chinese brands Omoda and Jaecoo have confirmed plans to localize production in Spain. This involves the EBRO Factory in Barcelona, which previously belonged to Nissan and was closed in 2021.

Production in Spain: Where and Which Models

Production will be based at the EBRO Factory in Catalonia, where models under the EBRO brand are already being assembled. Omoda and Jaecoo vehicles will be added to this lineup in the future.

The first models slated for production in Spain will be the fully electric Omoda 5 EV and Jaecoo 5 EV. This choice is driven by a desire to avoid European tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

Step-by-Step Localization and Plant Development

Initially, the vehicles will be assembled from SKD kits supplied from China. This approach allows for a quick production launch and minimizes investment risks.

Later, a shift toward deeper localization is planned. By the end of the year, welding and painting operations will begin at the plant, leading to an expansion of the workforce by 150 to 200 employees.

When Production Starts and Sales Plans

According to preliminary data, production of the Jaecoo 5 EV could begin as early as November 2026. The Omoda 5 EV is likely to follow later on the assembly line, around 2027.

Simultaneously, the brands have set an ambitious sales target. In 2026, Omoda and Jaecoo aim to sell about 40,000 vehicles in Spain, nearly double last year's result.

Overall, this move represents more than just expanding their presence—it's about full integration into the European market. Localizing production reduces dependence on imports and makes Chinese cars more competitive in the EU.
