BMW's Neue Klasse platform: electric vehicles and digital innovation
BMW is preparing a major update to its model lineup with the introduction of the Neue Klasse platform. This platform will serve as the foundation for future vehicles across all brands within the group, from Mini to Rolls-Royce.
The key difference with this new architecture is a shift in focus from traditional platforms to software, electronics, and digital features. The company notes that artificial intelligence already plays a crucial role both in development and in the operation of vehicle systems.
To create the Neue Klasse, BMW engaged over 10,000 developers. They utilize their own digital environment called Codecraft, which operates in the cloud on 120,000 virtual processors. During peak periods, up to 200,000 software builds were completed daily, and the software for a single vehicle can reach 500 million lines of code.
One of the first models on this new platform is the updated BMW i3. It is expected to demonstrate the capabilities of the Neue Klasse, including the combination of performance and modern digital solutions.
The platform's technologies will be adapted for different brands within the group, taking into account their specific characteristics. Already, BMW and Mini share a common infotainment system with different interface designs.
The company also considers regional differences. For instance, in China, more than 70% of the software is adapted for the local market. BMW employs a local-for-local strategy and is developing local engineering centers.
This new platform will form the basis for vehicles from 2026 onward, shaping the development of technology and digital features in BMW cars.
