Volkswagen electric Touareg: revival plans and hidden luxury concept

According to automotive magazine 32CARS, Volkswagen is considering bringing back the Touareg as a fully electric SUV. After ending the 24-year history of the combustion-engine model, the brand is looking to keep its flagship in the lineup by adapting it to new market realities.

Despite being discontinued, the Touareg still has a loyal following. These are customers who want a large, technologically advanced, and comfortable vehicle without paying extra for a premium badge. Volkswagen is aiming to capture this segment between mainstream and premium models.

The new Touareg is expected to be built on the SSP platform, which will serve as the foundation for the company's future electric vehicles. This will allow it to incorporate technology from Audi and Porsche, including modern drive systems and electronics. Preliminary data suggests the model could launch after the electric Golf, likely around 2027–2028.

The large SUV format will remain, as this class accounts for up to 80% of the segment. Volkswagen is betting on a "hidden luxury" concept—offering high levels of comfort and technology without overt premium branding.
