MG U9 EV electric pickup unveiled with 3,500 kg towing capacity

MG unveiled its U9 EV electric pickup at the Melbourne Motor Show in Australia today. This marks the first electric pickup the manufacturer will sell in the Australian market.

Pricing for the new model hasn't been finalized yet, but top-spec versions could likely exceed $70,000. This estimate considers the typical price gap between diesel and electric vehicles, plus the fact that the diesel U9 currently costs up to $60,990 in Australia.

Under the hood, the MG U9 EV packs a dual-motor setup: a 200 kW rear motor and a 125 kW front motor, delivering a combined 325 kW. It uses a 102 kWh battery pack, which MG claims provides a WLTP range of 430 km when unloaded.

Where it stands out from rivals is its towing capacity. The U9 EV can tow up to 3,500 kg, matching its diesel sibling. This gives it an edge over competitors like the HiLux, which is rated for up to 2,000 kg.

More details on the 2026 MG U9 EV, including final pricing and full specifications, will be released closer to its Australian launch.
