Next-generation BMW 3 Series engines: B48TÜ3, B58TÜ3, and the i3

The headline upgrades for the next-generation BMW 3 Series center on its engines. BMW will introduce a thoroughly reworked iteration of the familiar four-cylinder turbo, the B48TÜ3, which is set to deliver more power and improved efficiency thanks to a suite of engineering refinements.

Alongside it, the company has a heavily updated B58TÜ3, a six-cylinder unit with increased output and lower fuel consumption. This engine is expected to make its first appearance around the summer of 2027, coinciding with the start of production of the facelifted flagship 7 Series of the G70 generation. The upgraded powerplant is then due to appear in the next generation of the M350 variant.

At launch, the new 3 Series is planned in two core versions: a traditional gasoline model carrying the G50 designation and a modern all-electric i3. That spread should speak to both long-time fans of classic drivetrains and buyers focused on cleaner, tech-forward options, keeping the 3 Series’ character intact while broadening its reach. The timing for the six-cylinder’s debut also suggests a measured, phased rollout that fits the brand’s steady approach to evolution.
