BMW patent hints at a two-piece Rolls-Royce hood comeback
Rolls-Royce may revive a classic hood layout that was popular in the first half of the 20th century. A BMW AG patent application filed in May 2024 and published in the WIPO database describes a method for mounting a hood made of two sections fixed to separate crossmembers. The filing does not explicitly name Rolls-Royce, yet the drawings clearly echo the modern Phantom, Ghost, Spectre, or Cullinan. If realized, the concept would read as a respectful nod to the marque’s coachbuilt heritage while staying aligned with its contemporary design language.
The application outlines two configurations: a bonnet with central hinges, and a split panel with four hinges at the base of the windshield. Both layouts can be used to access power units or, in electric cars, a front trunk. Company representatives said a similar approach has already been applied on the limited Boat Tail to reach the rear compartment. Solutions like these fit the brand’s ceremonious approach to bodywork while promising practical gains for access and modern EV packaging.
