New York State Police Adds Ford Mustang GT S650 to Patrol Fleet for Speed Enforcement
The New York State Police has added 19 new Ford Mustang GTs of the latest S650 generation to its fleet. These vehicles will be used for targeted speed control and to increase patrol visibility on the roads.
Although the department traditionally prefers SUVs, the choice of the Mustang comes down to cost savings — the coupe is roughly 30% cheaper. The cars are equipped with a naturally aspirated V8 from the Coyote family paired with an automatic transmission.
The standard version reaches a top speed of around 155 mph, while the Performance package pushes it to about 166 mph. Features include upgraded suspension, Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential, and cooling systems for demanding use.
Some of the cars have already entered service in the Capital Region, while the rest are being fitted with lighting, communications gear, and special equipment before rolling out statewide.
The new patrol vehicles stand out with a black livery featuring STATE TROOPER lettering and state police emblems. These measures are intended to improve enforcement against violations and dangerous driving. While models like this are often associated with racing, in this case they are used for traffic monitoring and prevention.
