Geely weighs US market entry and potential Ford partnership

Chinese auto giant Geely continues to explore the prospects of entering the US market while simultaneously negotiating with Ford about potential technological cooperation. The company is not ready to launch sales immediately, but a final decision could be reached by 2029.

American consumers have already shown interest in Geely vehicles—at the CES 2026 trade show, the brand's models attracted visitor attention. However, high import tariffs and restrictions related to digital systems and connected services remain key obstacles.

If current barriers persist, Geely will have to consider alternative strategies. These include local vehicle assembly, using adapted software, and sourcing components from outside China.

An additional factor is the stance of US automakers. Despite more moderate statements recently, Ford still prioritizes supporting the domestic industry. However, the companies are already discussing possible cooperation options, including the use of Geely platforms in future models.

Geely already has a presence in North America through the Volvo and Polestar brands, which gives the company some experience in this market. However, a direct entry under its own name remains a difficult challenge.

Geely's entry into the US would pose a serious challenge to the market, but for now it is more of a long-term strategy. The barriers are too high, and without localization, the project is unlikely to be realized. Still, the talks with Ford show that the parties are looking for mutually beneficial solutions.
