Polestar will replace Google Assistant with Gemini across its lineup

Google is officially getting Gemini ready for the road—marking the first time the AI will serve as a full-scale in-car assistant for Polestar. The brand says it will gradually replace Google Assistant with Gemini across all its models, including the Polestar 2, 3, and the forthcoming Polestar 5. It feels like a pivot point that pushes the auto industry into a fresh round of rivalry among top AI companies.

Many automakers already work with chatbots: Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz have plugged in ChatGPT, while Tesla relies on its own Grok. For brands running Google Automotive OS, moving to Gemini looks like the natural progression—and it neatly keeps everything within one ecosystem.

Polestar showcased the setup on a Polestar 5 in Helsinki, where the head of UX said Gemini would go beyond basic voice commands to sustain natural back-and-forth. Owners will be able to ask follow-up questions, float ideas, or request explanations—essentially conversing with the car as with a capable partner. Done right, that promises a less rigid, more human feel to everyday interactions.

As Google Automotive OS spreads, Google’s position in automotive AI hardens. The system is already in use at GM, Ford, Honda, Nissan, Renault, Volvo, and Polestar. In its full version, the OS brings navigation, an app store, and tight service integration.
