Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport Edition 50 Claims Fastest FWD Nürburgring Lap
The Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport Edition 50 has become the fastest front-wheel-drive production car on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. It completed the 20.832-kilometer lap in 7 minutes and 44.523 seconds.
The previous record was held by the Honda Civic Type R Grade S. The margin was razor-thin—the Golf GTI beat the Honda by just 0.358 seconds. Before the Civic Type R, the title belonged to the Renault Mégane RS Trophy-R.
The record run was performed by Volkswagen test driver and engineer Benjamin Leuchter. The car wasn't entirely stock—it was equipped with the optional GTI Performance package, priced at 3,890 euros. That package includes 19-inch alloy wheels, semi-slick tires, a specially tuned sports suspension, and a lightweight R-Performance exhaust system with titanium rear mufflers.
The Golf GTI Clubsport Edition 50 produces 325 horsepower. While it's technically a production model, the result underscores how crucial chassis tuning, tires, and weight-saving measures are in the battle for front-wheel-drive hot hatch supremacy.
