Hyundai's New Ladder Frame Architecture for Electrified Pickup

Hyundai is working on a new ladder frame architecture for a future electrified pickup. The company offered an early design hint with the Boulder concept, shown at the 2026 New York Auto Show.

The technical foundation is outlined in a US patent called "Battery Pack Mounting Structure for Vehicle." It describes a ladder frame with the battery mounted low between structural rails, which helps lower the center of gravity while protecting the pack with high-strength steel.

The patent also details a side crush zone meant to absorb energy before it reaches the battery housing. Reinforced box sections are designed to limit deformation during a collision, and L-shaped side rails on the battery housing help maintain ground clearance.

According to reports, this platform is expected to underpin a mid-size Hyundai pickup for North America by 2030. The architecture isn't limited to EVs—it can also accommodate internal combustion and hybrid powertrains. Production is planned for the U.S., probably near the Hyundai Metaplant in Georgia.
