Renault 4 Plein Sud: Open-Air Feeling in an Electric Crossover

The electric Renault 4 gains a feature that directly references the original model from the 1960s. The new Plein Sud version comes with a folding fabric roof and is already available in the UK.

It's not a full convertible—the body keeps its rigid side panels, and the fabric section opens like a large sunroof. Renault points out the opening is larger than rivals', measuring 80 by 92 cm. For a compact electric crossover, that's a way to inject emotion without losing everyday usability.

Plein Sud pricing starts at £27,445 in the UK, including the £3,750 government EV grant. That's a £1,500 premium over the standard Renault 4. The name means 'straight south,' and it suits the car's vibe: more light, air, and summer spirit, without turning into a niche convertible.

Mechanically, the Plein Sud is identical. It uses the same front-mounted electric motor producing 148 hp and a 52 kWh battery. Because of the roof mechanism and a slight aerodynamic hit, range drops from 394 to 389 km. 0-100 km/h takes 8.2 seconds, and the trunk stays at 420 liters.

The version also includes an expanded safety suite, now totaling 28 systems. Renault aligns the model with the new European GSR2.3 standard, adding a driver fatigue camera and a new emergency stop assist.

The base Techno+ trim is generous: 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, partial synthetic leather upholstery, a 10-inch display with Google integration, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, adaptive cruise control, and automatic parking.

Step up to the Iconic+ trim from £29,445 with the grant, and you get unique black wheels, a power tailgate, heated front seats and steering wheel, yellow interior accents, and more driver assistance features.

R-Pass holders can order the Plein Sud now, with general order books opening on May 14. This version isn't about breaking records—it's about mood. Renault transforms a practical city EV into a car where nostalgia comes not from retro styling but from the open sky above.
