Hyundai Patents Adjustable Door Hinge for Improved Accessibility

Hyundai has patented a new door hinge design that could make entry and exit easier for people of different sizes. Standard car doors open to a fixed angle, and the intermediate detents often fail to hold the door securely, especially on an incline or in windy conditions. Hyundai’s solution allows the driver or passenger to adjust the maximum opening angle.

The patent replaces the conventional pull rod with an inner shaft and sleeve. The shaft features several grooves, and a locking pin determines the chosen position. Patent drawings illustrate eight different opening angles, from minimal to wide.

Adjusting the door’s opening range doesn’t require a visit to the service center. According to the patent, pressing the end of the hinge shaft causes a spring-loaded mechanism to advance the door to the next position. The mechanism can also reduce the opening angle when needed.

For now, this remains a patent, not confirmation of series production. The design adds moving parts and would require durability testing. Still, it shows how manufacturers are working to improve even familiar components for greater convenience.
