Chevrolet LS9 Long Block Engine Officially Discontinued
On the Chevrolet Performance website, the LS9 Long Block engine is listed as “discontinued.” The LS9 V8, originally developed for the C6 Corvette ZR1, gained fame for its high power output and numerous custom modifications.
Chevrolet Performance positioned the LS9 Long Block as a supercharger-ready engine, featuring forged internal parts and other performance-enhancing components. Essentially, the LS9 was a 376-cubic-inch (6.2-liter) Small-Block IV V8.
According to Chevrolet Performance, the engine produced 638 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 604 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm, with a maximum recommended engine speed of 6,600 rpm.
The engine used a cast-aluminum block with six-bolt main bearing caps for increased rigidity under high loads. Inside, the LS9 featured a forged steel crankshaft paired with forged titanium connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons. The valvetrain included a hydraulic roller camshaft, along with cast rocker arms and roller lifters.
Cylinder head design was another key highlight. The LS9 used aluminum cylinder heads in the L92 style with 68 cc combustion chambers.
