Class-Action Lawsuit Alleges Battery Defects in Jeep 4xe Models
A new class-action lawsuit has been filed in the US against Stellantis over the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrids. The complaint was lodged in federal court in Detroit.
Plaintiffs claim that Samsung's lithium-ion batteries used in these models are defective. They argue that Stellantis downplayed the severity of the issue, and that recalls and fixes came too late.
The lawsuit further alleges that the company chose to end production of the 4xe line rather than perform a thorough engineering fix. The Wrangler 4xe was once one of the best-selling plug-in hybrids in the US, but Stellantis halted production late last year.
A major recall took place in November, involving damage to the separator inside battery cells, which could lead to thermal runaway and fire. That recall covered about 320,000 units of the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe.
While Jeep worked on a remedy, owners were told to park their vehicles away from garages, carports, and other flammable structures. The article also notes that a similar lawsuit was filed in February in Utah.
