Volkswagen Tukan Pickup Officially Unveiled, Set for 2026 Premiere
Volkswagen has officially unveiled the upcoming Tukan, a compact half-ton pickup that will replace the aging Saveiro. The global premiere is set for later in 2026, with series production scheduled to begin in 2027 at the company's plant in Brazil.
The Tukan is part of Volkswagen's major investment program for South America: the company is pouring 20 billion reais (around $3.68 billion) into 21 models by 2028. The teaser images show a two-row crew cab, a crucial detail because the Saveiro never offered such a configuration.
Under the skin, the Tukan shares its MQB A0 platform with the Polo and the new Tera. A 1.5-liter eTSI mild hybrid powertrain is expected, while simpler versions could get a 1.0-liter TSI or a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engine. Depending on the motor, buyers can choose between a five-speed manual or a six-speed Tiptronic automatic.
Competition will come from the Chevrolet Montana, Ford Maverick, Fiat Toro, Ram Rampage, and the future Renault Niagara. Volkswagen is also likely to keep a single-cab body style, as without it the Tukan would struggle to challenge the Fiat Strada, Brazil's best-selling new car.
An interesting point of debate is the suspension. According to Tarantas News, the prototype shown uses leaf springs at the rear and drum brakes. Earlier there were discussions about two options: leaf springs for work-oriented versions and a torsion beam for more upscale trims.
Official confirmation for South Africa is not yet available, but that scenario is under consideration. The Tukan shares its platform with the Tera, which will be produced there starting in 2027 under the name Tengo. For Volkswagen, this isn't just another small pickup — it's a way to fill the gap between passenger cars and more expensive commercial vehicles.
