BMW iX1 Faces Production Delay Over 17- and 18-Inch Wheel Shortage

BMW has run into an unexpected hurdle with the iX1: the company doesn't have enough 17- and 18-inch wheels. As a result, production of the electric crossover may be temporarily paused, and customers are being asked to switch their orders to 19-inch rims.

On paper, that swap sounds like an upgrade—larger wheels typically look better and give a car a more premium, sporty appearance. But for an EV, that extra visual appeal isn't free. Bigger wheels often hurt ride comfort and can eat into range because of increased mass, worse aerodynamics, and higher-resistance tires. In its review of the iX1, Auto Express specifically noted that 19- and 20-inch wheels make the ride stiffer, while 17- and 18-inch options are a more sensible choice for comfort.

For iX1 buyers, the decision isn't just about looks. This small electric SUV is chosen for its upscale interior, quietness, urban practicality, and predictable running costs. If opting for larger wheels means faster delivery, owners may end up with a better-looking car that's actually a bit less practical: harsher over bumps and potentially less efficient.

The situation highlights just how fragile automotive supply chains remain. In the past, delays were blamed on chips, batteries, or complex electronics—now, car production can be held up by something as basic as wheel sizes. And it's often the "boring" base wheels that turn out to be the best choice for an electric vehicle.

The BMW iX1 is a key model for the brand: it's the smallest electric SUV in the lineup and one of the entry points into the premium EV segment.
