BYD is getting ready to launch the new Dolphin G DM-i in Europe. This compact plug-in hybrid targets the heart of the mass market. It's not a big SUV or a pricey EV. Instead, it's a B-segment hatchback measuring 4.16 meters long, built for city streets and buyers who want an affordable car without worrying about long trips.

The car uses BYD's own DM hybrid system. An electric motor up front delivers smooth, quick acceleration around town. When you need more range, the gasoline engine joins in. With a full battery and a full tank, BYD claims over 1,000 kilometers of total range. That format matters in Europe. Many drivers want EV-like daily commutes but can't rely solely on charging, especially if they lack home parking or often head out of town.

The Dolphin G DM-i fits that need: city driving feels almost electric, highway cruising works like a thrifty hybrid. Its dimensions are a match for the European B-segment (4.16 m long, 1.825 m wide). BYD highlights that this is the company's first model developed specifically with international markets, including Europe, in mind.

BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li called the European B-segment a cornerstone of the auto market and said the Dolphin G DM-i should make electrified mobility more accessible to more buyers.

BYD hasn't yet shared exact battery specs, trim levels, or pricing. The car is expected to debut in Germany in June, with first deliveries slated for late summer or early autumn.

The Dolphin G DM-i could be a crucial model for BYD. It's not the flashiest, but it's close to what European buyers really need. A small car becomes interesting again when it can go far and doesn't force a choice between a plug and a pump.
