Aisin Corporation has chosen Green Hills Software as the software platform for its next-generation driver monitoring system. The DMS suite, which includes an Alcohol Detection System, is designed to detect driver distraction, drowsiness, and signs of impairment.

Aisin is developing the system with NXP Semiconductors and Smart Eye, with the first release expected in 2028. Smart Eye is handling the AI-based driver monitoring, NXP is supplying the i.MX 9 processors, and Green Hills is providing real-time operating systems and development tools.

The Aisin system will passively detect possible alcohol impairment through image and behavioral analysis of the driver's state. If a risk is identified, it can alert the driver. The project aims to reduce accidents caused by human factors.

The system uses operating systems certified to ISO 26262 ASIL from Green Hills: INTEGRITY RTOS for in-cabin cameras and Smart Eye software, and µ-velOSity RTOS for the safety verification module. AI processing will run on the NPU (neural processing unit) within the NXP i.MX 9.

For new cars from the 2026 model year and beyond, such systems show the direction of safety evolution: in-cabin monitoring will become part of the overall vehicle electronic architecture rather than a standalone function.
