Honda recalls nearly 99,000 vehicles due to faulty passenger weight sensor
Honda is recalling 98,892 vehicles including Acura TLX and Honda Accord models over a passenger weight sensor defect that can cause airbag malfunction. Free repairs available.
Honda is recalling 98,892 vehicles in the U.S. due to a problem with the airbag system. The defect isn't in the airbag itself but in the weight sensor for the front passenger seat.
The recall affects certain 2022 Acura TLX, Accord Hybrid, and Honda Accord models. According to the NHTSA, the passenger weight sensor can crack and cause a short circuit. That can lead the system to incorrectly determine who is sitting in front, potentially allowing the airbag to deploy when it should be suppressed.
The most dangerous scenario involves a child or infant in a car seat on the front passenger seat. In such cases, the system is supposed to disable the airbag because its deployment could be harmful. If the sensor is wrong, the safety feature turns into an additional risk.
Repairs will be free. Dealers will replace the front passenger seat weight sensors. Owners of these vehicles should check their VIN and not delay visiting a service center: when it comes to airbags, even a small sensor plays a big role.
