Ford Patents New Turn Assist System for Commercial Vehicles in Tight Spaces
Ford files a patent for a system that helps commercial vehicles turn in tight spaces like narrow streets and loading docks, improving maneuverability for vans and trucks.
Ford has filed a patent for a system that allows a vehicle to turn around in tight spaces. The application was submitted on October 26, 2021, published on May 26, 2026, and assigned number 12637061.
The concept is similar to the Trail Turn Assist feature introduced on the Ford Bronco in 2021. That system reduces the turning radius at low speed by braking the inside rear wheel when the steering wheel is turned sharply.
Ford's new patent describes a similar approach, but for commercial vehicles. Instead of off-road trails, the scenarios could be narrow city streets, parking lots, warehouses, or loading dock areas. The system would brake one wheel to help the vehicle pivot in a confined space.
For large vans and work vehicles, this technology could make maneuvering easier where a normal turn would require multiple moves. This is especially relevant for vehicles that often operate in dense urban environments. Ford noted that patent applications are a routine part of protecting new ideas and don't necessarily indicate concrete product plans. The company stated that decisions about launching new features will be made based on customer interests.
