Family demands space, the soul demands drive. Sounds like a choice between a minivan and a sports car? Not quite. There’s a group of five premium SUVs that pull off both jobs — ferrying the kids to school and making the driver grin at every corner.

The lineup includes the Genesis GV80, Audi SQ7, Lexus TX 500h F Sport, Acura MDX Type S and BMW X7 M60i.

The Genesis GV80 earned its spot for a sumptuous cabin, a full deck of driver aids, an optional third row and a 375-hp V6. In 3.5T Prestige trim the crossover packs family-friendly tricks like rear sunshades, Baby Mode, the Passenger Talk system and blind-spot cameras. In effect, it’s a mobile living room that happens to go fast.

The Audi SQ7 is the German playbook in its purest form. A 500-hp V8, a roomy interior and a flexible second row with three individual seats. Zero to 100 km/h comes up in 4.3 seconds. All of it with room for seven.

The Lexus TX 500h F Sport plays a different game. Less aggression, more sophistication: a hybrid setup good for 366 hp, all-wheel drive and a generous third row. The pick for anyone chasing power without the guilt at the pump.

The Acura MDX Type S is arguably the most balanced offer here. A 3.0-liter turbo V6 with 355 hp, a removable middle seat in the second row, easy walk-through access to the third row and a built-in system for chatting with rear passengers. Price and character finally meet at the same point.

And the BMW X7 M60i is the peak of the list. A 523-hp V8 with a mild-hybrid system, air suspension, five-zone climate control and a cabin where seven people travel like they’re flying first class. Expensive? Without a doubt. But for sensations like these, plenty of buyers will sign the check.
