Alfa Romeo just confirmed the hatchback fans have begged for since 2020
After six years of silence, Alfa Romeo is back in the hatchback game. The target? Volkswagen Golf, BMW 1 Series, and Audi A3 — all at once.
After six years of silence, Alfa Romeo is heading back to the place where it once started its road to salvation. The Italians have officially confirmed a new C-segment compact hatchback — the first since the Giulietta rolled off the Cassino line at the end of 2020.
The goal? Nothing less than getting revenge on the Volkswagen Golf. And while it’s at it, taking on the BMW 1 Series, Mercedes A-Class and Audi A3. Modest ambitions, these are not.
The foundation will be the new STLA One architecture — the very same platform previously known as STLA Medium. Its debut is scheduled for 2027, and it will also underpin the next Peugeot 308 and Opel Astra. The architecture is multi-energy, so Alfa Romeo is promising both pure electric versions and ICE variants. No forced choice in favour of one technology — Stellantis has finally dropped the dogma.
Conceptually, the newcomer leans on the legacy of two iconic models — the Alfa Romeo 147 and Giulietta. That same 147 that pulled the brand out of the ditch in the early 2000s and walked away with the European Car of the Year title. According to Autocar, the future hatchback and the next Tonale will share a basic platform and a significant chunk of their powertrains — the classic “hatch plus crossover on one base” formula that rivals have been milking for years.
Electric versions will get an 800-volt architecture for ultra-fast charging. The ICE models will be served a portion of mild and plug-in hybrids from Stellantis’ standard arsenal. And — pay attention — the platform supports Steer-by-Wire, that same “steering without mechanics” technology recently shown on the Peugeot Polygon concept. Whether it will make it to a production Alfa is still an open question.
Alfa Romeo hasn’t named exact launch dates for the compact yet. But with the Tonale, everything is clear — its successor arrives in 2029. The clock is ticking.
