European Commission funds EV charging, hydrogen, ports and airports across 24 EU countries

The European Commission has approved more than €600 million for projects aimed at expanding alternative-fuel infrastructure in 24 EU countries. A total of 70 initiatives made the list, including the rollout of electric charging stations, hydrogen refueling sites, and facilities serving both maritime and aviation sectors. The program is meant to speed up the shift to cleaner solutions and make electric cars easier to adopt.

The funds will support the installation of over 1,000 150 kW chargers for light commercial vehicles, roughly 2,000 350 kW stations, and 586 1 MW points for heavy trucks. Plans also call for 38 hydrogen refueling stations. In seaports, operators will introduce shore power systems along with equipment designed to handle ammonia and methanol.

Dedicated support will also modernize 16 European airports, where ground services are set to transition to electric equipment. The lineup includes German projects as well: Stadtwerke Munchen will receive €3.8 million to electrify its bus fleet, while Eon Drive Infrastructure will put its grant toward expanding a charging network for freight transport. Taken together, these steps reinforce the EU’s broader push toward cost-efficient vehicles and lower emissions—and, importantly, they direct attention to heavy-duty transport and ports, where tangible gains can come quickly.
